Does Greece have a battery storage subsidy program?
Greece’s latest auction has awarded subsidies to 188.9 MW of standalone, front-of-the-meter, utility-scale battery energy storage. The auction was the third and final edition of a battery storage subsidy program launched in 2023, with the country now turning its focus towards a new 4.7 GW unsibsidized BESS scheme.
What is Greece's third energy storage auction?
Greece’s third energy storage auction has been completed with nine projects selected. It was the final auction where the state provides subsidies to build battery energy storage systems (BESS). A total of almost 800 MW in capability has been awarded through all three storage auctions.
Does Greece have a Bess subsidy program?
Moving forward, Greece is abandoning subsidizing BESS via auctions. Instead, the country has recently launched a new program for 4.7 GW of unsibsidized BESS which will be offered priority grid connections on a merchant basis without subsidy support. Why is Greece focusing on energy storage?
Greece has been actively focusing on energy storage since the emergence of the RES “boom” in 2020. The country recognised the pivotal role of energy storage in the energy transition and emphasised its importance in the first iteration of the country’s National Energy and Climate Plan in 2019.
Which energy plants will be installed in Greece?
The rest of the list comprises Amber Energy (18 MW), Plain Solar (7.9 MW), Enercoplan (25 MW), Arkadia Storage (10 MW), Heliothema (10 MW) and Ardassa Energy (18 MW). The facilities will be installed in the Western Macedonia region in northern Greece and in the municipalities of Megalopolis, Tripoli, Gortynia and Oichalia in the Peloponnese region.
Which Greek companies were successful at the tender?
Other Greek firms who were successful at the tender are: PPC Renewables with a 50 MW/200 MWh project; Enerkoplan Ιnvestment with a 25 MW/100 MWh project; Ardassa Energy with a 18 MW/72 MWh battery; Arcadia Storage, which is owned by Eunice, with a 10 MW/40 MWh battery; and Plain Solar with a 7.9 MW/31.6 MWh facility.
