The numbers The share of renewable energy sources in national electricity demand has increased from 43% in 2022 to 52% in 2023.
Why is the Dutch wind energy sector growing?
The Dutch wind energy sector is therefore growing strongly, both on land and at sea. Offshore wind energy is essential for the future energy supply and sustainability of the Netherlands. Despite challenges such as ecological effects and rising costs, the sector continues to innovate and grow.
What percentage of Dutch electricity is generated by wind?
In 2020 wind power provided 11.54% of Dutch electricity generation (see table above) while solar power provided an additional 7.25%, for a combined 18.79% For offshore wind a new system of tendering is under development. New wind farm deployment is based on the SER agreement that describes a plan for five years of tendering 700 MW per year.

The Netherlands plays a leading role in the energy transition through large-scale investments in wind energy. The Dutch wind energy sector is therefore growing strongly, both on land and at sea. Offshore wind energy is essential for the future energy supply and sustainability of the Netherlands.
Will there be a 6 GW onshore wind power in the Netherlands?
The growth rate in 2020 has increased compared to last year, 537 MW new onshore wind power was installed. The growth, however, remains hampered because of the spatial and permit issues and opposition by local residents. More than 6 GW onshore wind power seems unlikely in the Netherlands.
How much energy storage does the Netherlands need?
To achieve its renewable energy targets, reports in 2021 indicate that the Netherlands will need to install between 29 and 54 gigawatts (GW) of energy storage capacity by 2050. Storage with efficient management systems and digital controls is a crucial element of a reliable, flexible and affordable energy system.
