This study assesses the ability of a grid energy storage device to perform both peak shaving and frequency regulation. It presents a grid energy storage model using a modelled VRFB storage device and develops a controller to provide a net power output, enabling the system to continuously perform these functions.

Vanadium prices and corresponding electrolyte prices from 1980 through 2021. The left-hand Y axis measures the market price of vanadium pentoxide, a common source of vanadium sold on the global market. The right-hand Y axis translates those prices into prices for vanadium-based electrolytes for flow batteries.

Do flow batteries degrade?

That arrangement addresses the two major challenges with flow batteries. First, vanadium doesn’t degrade. “If you put 100 grams of vanadium into your battery and you come back in 100 years, you should be able to recover 100 grams of that vanadium—as long as the battery doesn’t have some sort of a physical leak,” says Brushett.
